Linwood “Sonny” Scott, Jr.,

Sonny, co-owner of the Scott Farms family operation near Lucama, N.C., was born and raised about 1/2 mile from the headquarters of his family’s 5,000-acre farming and agribusiness enterprise that covers Wilson, Wayne, and Johnston Counties. In 1979, Sonny and his family formed a family farm corporation with sweet potatoes and tobacco as their main crops.

Scott Farms is among the leading sweet potato grower/packer/shippers in the industry today, selling sweet potatoes to retail and foodservice markets across the U.S. as well as Europe, which is part of their Scott Farms UK, Ltd. business. Over the years, Sonny has also been actively involved in promoting North Carolina sweet potatoes as a 12-year board member of the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission.

Sonny and his wife, Alice, who have been married over 40 years, are the parents of two sons currently part of the Scott Farms management team, Linwood III and Dewey. The family also has a beloved family dog, a Lab and Chow mix, named Abby.

Linwood H. Scott, III

A graduate of Wilson Christian Academy in 1987, Linwood attended Atlantic Christian (now Barton) College, but after a few years of being both a student and part-time farmer, Linwood decided to return to farming full time with his dad. Early in his farming career, Linwood took part in the Philip Morris Agricultural Leadership Development Program. A Wilson Co. Farm Bureau leader since 1985, he has been a member of the Wilson Co. Planning Board since 2004.

Dewey R. Scott

Dewey, who graduated from Hunt High School in Wilson County, went on to earn a B.A. in communications from Barton College in 1994. Following graduation, Dewey took a job in the finance industry. But about two years later, he made the decision to come back and farm with his dad and brother.  Dewey also took part in NC State CALS’ Leadership Development program.  Following in his father’s footsteps, Dewey became a member of the board of directors of the N.C. Sweet Potato Commission in 2007 and currently is serving as president of the NC Sweet Potato Commission.

The Scott Family Is
Outstanding In Its Community

Shortly after he started farming on his own, Sonny received Wilson County’s Outstanding Farmer of the Year award. And in more recent years, both Linwood III and Dewey were also named as NC’s Outstanding Young Farmer. Linwood III went on to become the National Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year award winner in 2000.

The Scotts have been very active citizens in their community, much of it based around their life-long membership in the Marsh Swamp Original Free Will Baptist Church near their farm. Both Linwood III and Dewey are very active in youth athletic activities in the county.
