The large Scott Farms tobacco operation is managed by Linwood
III. Among his responsibilities are growing plants,
transplanting them into Scott Farms’ best fields, looking after
seasonal production practices, and harvesting, curing, and
marketing of both flue-cured and burley tobacco grown by Scott
Farms. The Scott Farms tobacco operation is fully mechanized,
from using mechanical transplanters to harvesters.
This season, Scott Farms is growing 1,100 acres of tobacco –
nearly all flue-cured, except for about 40 acres of burley
tobacco, which works well on the Scotts’ darker, heavier
soils. Over a million tobacco plants are started in each of
seven Scott Farms greenhouses devoted to tobacco production
and will end up in one of 110 curing barns on our farms.
