Expansion of Scott Farms, Inc. has been constant since Linwood "Sonny" Scott, Jr. took over the family farm. Acquiring and planting more acres than the year before was the method that worked best for Sonny.
Since Scott Farms, Inc. is wholly owned by the Scott family, expansion sits squarely on the shoulders of the family. Today, the Scott’s family farming operation includes around 20,000 acres on sandy-loam soils—the best soil for growing top-quality sweet potatoes and tobacco—in Wilson, Johnston, Nash, Edgecombe and Wayne counties in NC. With 4,500 acres of sweet potatoes, 4,000 acres of tobacco, 2,500 acres of soybeans, and some acreage of wheat and corn. In 2021, the first peanut crop was harvested for by the farm.
Scott Farms is a forward-thinking and innovative company. In 2000, Scott Farms expanded into the United Kingdom, leading to the formation of the international subsidiary Scott Farms UK, Limited. Over the past 19 years, since entering the international space, business continues to expand throughout Europe.
In September 2013, the family began planning for further expansion of the farm and farm operations, beginning with the construction of a 60,000 square-foot sizing, grading, packing, and shipping facility in the heart of the Lucama, N.C-based farm. This state-of-the-art facility is unique to the sweet potato industry and is GlobalGAP certified and PTI compliant.
At Scott Farms, safety and traceability are paramount when it comes to production and fulfillment. Included in the effort for a more transparent supply chain, the farm works closely with all agencies that regulate the growth and sale of farm commodities and goods.

Born and raised a half mile from the headquarters of Scott Farms, Inc., Linwood "Sonny" Scott, Jr. is the patriarch of the modern farm operation. Beginning in 1980, when the farm was incorporated, Sonny began making preparations for the future of what Scott Farms would become. As President and co-owner of the business with his wife and two sons, he led Scott Farms to be one of the largest agribusiness enterprises in the industry today.
Sonny loved farming from a young age. After returning to the farm from a post in the United States Army Reserves, he quickly became a leader in the industry. Throughout his career, Sonny won numerous awards for his farming and business acumen including the Wilson County Young Farmer of the Year award (1977), North Carolina Young Farmer of the Year (1977), Outstanding Young Flue-Cured Tobacco Farmer (1979), and Southern Flue-Cured Tobacco Festival Young Farmer of the Year (1981). Sonny and his wife, Alice, were married for 58 years.

Born and raised just three miles from what is now her home, Alice Scott has always had deep roots in the farming community. She now lives on what was once her grandparents’ farm and home, with the adjoining farm having been owned by Sonny’s father. Alice and Sonny first met as children while playing on the farm, and from a young age, Alice dreamed of one day marrying a farmer. The two dated throughout high school, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in family, farming, and shared values.
Before returning home to the farm, Alice worked with IBM. She later left her position to work alongside Sonny, becoming his partner in both life and business. Throughout the years, Alice has been active in almost every aspect of the farm operation. Today, she remains closely involved with tobacco sales and the caring and improvement of worker housing, continuing to play an important role in the daily success of Scott Farms.
Beyond the farm, Alice has always been active in her community, In 2020 she earned the “Excellence in Agriculture Award” awarded to her by the Tobacco Farm Life Museum. Alice has also served on local boards and even served as chairman of the State FSA Committee. Outside of family and farming, her greatest work and passion is animal rescue, reflecting her caring and compassionate spirit. Alice is deeply proud of her two sons, who have carried on the love of farming and passed that same passion down to their children, helping ensure the Scott Farms family legacy continues for generations to come.

Serving as Vice-President of Tobacco and Farm Operations of Scott Farms, Inc., Linwood H. Scott, III carries the day-to-day load of the farm production and oversees the field operations for all crops grown. The former United States National Young Farmer of the Year (2000) quickly made a name for himself in the agriculture and agribusiness world.
Among the accolades earned, Linwood has been recognized for both his leadership on the farm and in the community. Earning the Standard Commercial Tobacco Company Outstanding Young Tobacco Farmer for Wilson County in 1998, he went on to receive some of the most prestigious awards in the industry. Following in his father's footsteps, he was the Wilson County Outstanding Young Farmer and the North Carolina Outstanding Young Farmer in 1999.
Linwood has a love for farming passed down from his father. Farming allows Linwood the privilege of working alongside his mother, brother, wife, daughters, and sons-in-law on the same land that generations of Scott’s before him tilled. He hopes to pass this heritage and distinguished tradition in the farming community along to his own children and grandchildren. He is married to the Kimberly Scott, who serves as an office manager for the farming operation.

A leader in the Sweet Potato industry and former President of the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission, Dewey R. Scott, Vice President of Sweet Potato Operations and co-owner of Scott Farms, has dedicated many hours to the growth in the industry.
As a catalyst for the development of the Scott Farms Sweet Potato Chip, available exclusively in the United Kingdom, Dewey has been a visionary for the sales of sweet potatoes as a whole product line in both the US and UK. This vision was made possible by his involvement in the state-of-the-art 60,000 sq. ft. grading, packing, and shipping facility located at the Scott Farms, Inc. headquarters.
The former North Carolina Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year was a key presenter in The Automation Conference in Chicago, I.L. in April 2015. The conference organizers tapped him to lead the discussion on Serialization in the Produce Industry, where he presented the future of the industry regarding automation and computer assistance. Additionally, Dewey develops the micropropagation efforts of the farm to ensure a consistent and healthy crop from year to year. Dewey is married to Heather Scott, who handles international shipping for the operation.
